![]() ![]() ![]() Eddie, the leader of the gang and his girlfriend Melissa take notice of the player. Samantha also issues time trials to the player, her rewards being unique visual modifications instead.Įventually, the player draws the attention of The Eastsiders, after racing their members Chad, Kurt and Todd to climb up the racing ranking boards. In event #7, she introduces him to T.J, a mechanic who rewards him with numerous performance upgrades and parts, provided he wins his time trials challenges. She kickstarts the player by introducing him to local street racers such as Jose (who offers Circuit events), Klutch (who offers Drag events) and Dirt (who offers Drift events). She helps the player buy his first car, although she pokes fun at the player's choice of the car, regardless of the vehicle chosen, saying "ouch, that's seriously weak, dude". Samantha is the player's contact in Olympic City and she tours him across the import culture scene and illegal street racing therein. He dominantly wins the race only to be woken up by Samantha from his daydreaming. The player begins the game in a circuit race in Olympic City in a white Honda/Acura Integra Type R, sporting unique vinyls and a wide body kit. Underground was critically and commercially successful, and was followed by Need for Speed: Underground 2 in 2004. Rather than exotic cars, Underground featured vehicles associated with the import scene. ![]() All races take place in the fictional Olympic City. It was the first game in the series to offer a career mode featuring a storyline, and a garage mode that allowed players to fully customize their cars with a large variety of brand-name performance and visual upgrades. Underground rebooted the franchise, ignoring the previous Need for Speed games which featured sports cars and exotics. Three different games were produced, one for consoles and Windows, and the other for the Game Boy Advance along with a version developed by Global VR for Arcades that was published by Konami with assistance from Electronic Arts. It was developed by EA Black Box and published by Electronic Arts. However, the rather unnecessary stretches of road between the races needlessly reduce the overall enjoyment to be gained from the game.Need for Speed: Underground is a 2003 racing video game and the seventh installment in the Need for Speed series. Pro's: The races remain pulse quickening fun and the different race modes and customisation options ensure some longevity.Ĭon's: A big open game world works wonders for some games, but actually slows the overall pace of Need for Speed Underground 2 down too much.Ĭonclusion: When racing gamers will get a lot out of Need for Speed Underground 2 and it is certainly worth a test drive. It is just a shame that the balance between the high octane racing and the periods of free roaming wasn’t given more consideration in development. Car customisation remains a strong point in the game and the sheer range of race types, which include drag racing, outrun races, circuit races and the underground racing league, will keep gamers engaged for some time. The graphics and visual effects look good, but collisions are rather poorly modelled. The story that unfolds during career mode also slows things down with too many cut scenes. While some gamers will initially enjoy having the freedom to drive around searching for races to compete in, they will soon wish they could just skip straight to the races without the lull in action between them caused by the sheer scale of the city. Need for Speed Underground 2 was developed in a period when open gaming worlds became all the rage. While the racing in Need for Speed Underground 2 still provides enough thrills for race fans, the long stretches of non-competitive driving that comes from having a new large open city to burn rubber around detracts from the overall experience. Focussing on the shady import tuner scene, the arcade style racer impressed with its diverse tracks, graphics and customisation features. Need for Speed Underground 2 Editor's ReviewĮA deliver a sequel with pulse quickening races let down by too much aimless driving in between.įew would argue that Need for Speed Underground was an exhilarating addition to the Need for Speed franchise. ![]()
